Lies I Tell My Kids

A Message from the Writer of This Novel

Wayne Jones Episode 21

I'm taking a break from the podcast to work on the structure of the novel

Hi, I’m Wayne Jones. Welcome to Lies I Tell My Kids. This is episode 21, and I’m speaking as Wayne Jones, the writer of this novel and podcast called Lies I Tell My Kids. This is basically an experiment for me. I write the episodes usually just a few days before I actually publish them. They are in effect the first draft of the novel I am writing.

One of the results of this method of weekly episodes (or chapters) is that I don’t get a chance to pause as a writer, look back over what I’ve written, and perhaps most importantly plan out the rest of the book. So far I have written and published here about close to 20,000 words in total, which is about one-third of an average-length novel.

I need to take a break for a little while in order to work on the structure of the novel as a whole. Change some things. Delete some things. And stand back and think about how I want the story to proceed and ultimately to end. In order to do that, for the next little while—hard to say, but I’d estimate it will be at least two months—I won’t be publishing episodes of the podcast, but please stay subscribed or keep the site bookmarked, because I will be back to finish it off.

As you will have noticed, I’ve been concentrating on a bit of a troubled marriage, where the husband suspects his wife of cheating on him. They have two kids who are happy and have good relationships with their parents. I’ve interspersed though the story of their first child and the grief they experienced from his accidental drowning in their swimming pool and one of the things I want to work on is how this death of a child affects not only their relationships with their present children, but also the couple’s own relationship.

So, we’ll take a break, but I will be back. Thanks very much for listening so far.
